Meeting: Wednesday 09 April 2008

Meeting Location:

Caterpillar Inc., 325 Route 31, Montgomery, IL 60538

Introduction and Welcome, 8:00

Christoph Leser, Dan Lingenfelser, Tom Cordes

Technical Presentations

  • Professor Greg Glinka ( University of Waterloo ) 45 min

A study of the stress ratio effects on fatigue crack growth using the unified two-parameter fatigue crack growth driving force

  • Professor John Goldak ( Carleton University ) 45 min

Enabling a designer to simulate the transient 3D temperature field, the evolution of microstructure in low alloy steel welds, transient 3D displacement, stress and strain in the structure as it is being welded

Case Studies of “Real World” Problems Requiring “Quality” Fatigue Analysis

Lunch and Demo time 90 min, 12:00

Perspectives

The Future of Fatigue Life Prediction – Dan Lingenfelser, optional presentation can be removed if time gets short, 30 min

Future Focused Effort(s) {Working Session}

Weld Fatigue

Total Fatigue Life Predicting {Crack Initiation (Ni) + Crack Propagation (Np)}

Discussion of potential future efforts

  • Christoph Leser to facilitate, 60 min

  • - The Fall meeting will be at the University of Toledo in October, exact date to be determined.

    - Dan Lingenfelser  will lead the weld initiative. John Bonnen stepped down.

    - Mohammed El Zein (Deere) will organize a weld tech session at the next meeting

    - Helmut Dannbauer will simulate the welding process and use simulated residual stresses for fatigue estimation

    - Mohammed El Zein will simulate welding  of a single bead, this needs to be written out in standard format ODP, universal file or similar

    - At the next meeting we will do the planning for the following meeting earlier in the day (before lunch?)

Meeting Ends, 5:00 pm
