SAE Fatigue Design and Evaluation Committee Meeting Micro- Minutes

March 27-28 1995 Meeting LaConner, Washington Host: Gail Leese, PACCAR

Disclaimer: These are not official minutes. They are just a summary of one individual's notes.

DATES & LOCATION OF NEXT MEETING: 17-18 OCTOBER 1995 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO, CANADA. NOTE: MEETINGS ARE ON A TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. HOST: Shakar Meguid

Monday, March 27, 1995

Main Committee Meeting: Jim Scheltens (standing in for Gail Leese) addressed the local arrangements for the meeting. Jim provided information on the local restaurants, available tours, the general area and the Paccar Technical Center tour scheduled for Monday after the last division meeting. The Technical Session scheduled for Tuesday morning was reviewed. Al Conle made some introductory comments, gave a brief summary of the meeting agenda and then began the meeting.

Charles Barrett summarized the Surface Enhancement Division efforts over the past six months. They are working with eleven specifications, four of which are concerned with different shot peening media. They are developing a specification for cold working by rolling. There are five subcommittees dealing with: a handbook, a manual, steel, glass and ceramic shot peening media and x-ray diffraction. They support two handbooks. They meet periodically between the full committee meetings. Polarization within the committee is a problem with which they are dealing. They are beginning to interface with military standards.

Tom Cordes reported on the new multiaxial book effort. Approximately a third of those who received letters requesting abstracts for the publication have responded. Those papers will form the core of the book. He and co-editor Steve Tipton are putting together a new, less comprehensive, outline from those contributions. They will be calling members of the committee asking for their help in filling any of the gaps. Anyone who has not responded with an abstract of what they would like to contribute should do so in the next two weeks or they will miss their opportunity to be a part of the publication.

The committee chairmen: Russ Chernenkoff (Material Properties Division), John Hakala (Structural Analysis Division), Phil Dindinger (Component Test Division), Tom Cordes for Mike Messman (Life Prediction Division), and Dan Morrow (Road Load Data and Simulation Group) previewed the agendas for their upcoming respective sessions. Dan Morrow emphasized the need for participation in the Tuesday planning meeting. The schedule was shifted to account for a full Structural Analysis Division Session and two less presentations in the Fatigue Life Prediction Session.

Russ Chernenkoff reported that the fatigue session for the 1995 SAE Congress went well. There were eleven presentations and it was attended by seventy-five people. A one day 1996 SAE Congress Fatigue Session will be held and papers are requested. John Bonnen will help organize the meeting.

Al Conle announced that the SAE FD&E Committee now has an internet "Web (ftp) site" at the University of Minnesota. The website address is: http://www.me.umn.edu:70/0h/home/langlais/SAE-fde and can be accessed through Mosiac or Netscape. Currently some of the more commonly used SAE FD&E strain histories can be downloaded from that address. Contact Tim Langlais at: langlais(at)me.umn.edu with any questions or contributions.

Al also reported on the, corporate sponsored, J.Y. Mann (computerized) Fatigue Bibliography. Scanning of the first volume is complete. Scanning of volume two is in progress. So far there are four contributors to this effort: Failure Associates, Safety Cab, Reed Automotive and Ford. This effort will make all fatigue references accessible over internet systems like Mosiac and possibly available on media like CDs.

Ralph Stephens gave a liaison report on ASTM activities. Ralph announced that their next meeting was being held from 14 to 17 May 1995 in Denver, Colorado and that the E08 committee was sponsoring a symposium on Multiaxial Fatigue during the session. He described the success of the recent symposium on "How Do You Make Life Predictions" and invited participation in a follow-up symposium.

Ralph Stephens announced that the 1995 SAE (University of Iowa) Fatigue Short Course will be held on August 8-11, 1995 at the Management Education Center at Michigan State University in Troy, Michigan. He announced that Henry Jaeckel was retiring from the short course staff and that they were seeking a replacement with comparable testing and test analysis background.

Henry Fuchs Student Travel Award: Hong Yan Zhang, from the University of Iowa Mechanical Engineering Department, was presented with the Henry Fuchs Student Travel Award. Ms Zhang presented her work on Stress Intensity Factors for Round Bars and Fracture Toughness of SAE 1045 Steel Under Three Different Heat Treatments.

The Structural Analysis Division was chaired by John Hakala. Maolin Tsai discussed Applications of Durability Design to Vehicle Structures. Hari Agrawal gave a presentation on Applications of Fatigue Analysis to Vehicle Structures. Ed Lu addressed the General Needs and Capabilities of a Crack Growth Analysis Code. A summary of the relative capabilities of some of the more common codes were reviewed. Grzegorz Glinka explained methods for Developing Fatigue Crack Growth Stress Intensity Solutions from Weight Functions. Sheri Sheppard reviewed the work she has completed on the Refinement of a Methodology for Fatigue Life Estimation in Resistance Spot Weld Connections since her last presentation on that project to the SAE FD&E Committee in 1991.

The Materials Properties Division was chaired by Russ Chernenkoff. Russ reported briefly on the 1995 SAE Congress and made a call for papers by July for the 1996 SAE Congress. Steve Tipton did not make it to the meeting so there was no report on the progress of the Powder Metal Effort. Mohamad El-Zein described additional testing and analysis that has been completed in the last six months to address the ability to predict the fatigue of composites after impact. Mohamad showed excellent analytical correlation with the data generated by the different members of the task group. Peter Kurath reported on the additional work that has been completed on composite samples with holes. He showed that is was necessary to look at the data statistically, more so then with more well behaved materials such as steels, in order to address the higher degree of fatigue life scatter. Ed Lu reviewed the additional work he has done with Phil Dindinger on characterizing the stress strain and crack initiation fatigue life behavior of AerMet 100. The behavior of the material has been addressed from the very high plastic strain region to the high cycle region. Ed is looking for other members of the committee who would be interested in further work on this project.

The Fatigue Life Prediction Division was chaired by Tom Cordes for Mike Messman who was ill. Chin-Chan Chu reported on her recent work developing a Multiaxial Neuber's Rule Methodology. Tim Langlais presented the work he is completing on Notch Corrections for Multiaxial Fatigue Analysis. Much discussion between Chin- Chan Chu, Tim Langlais and Grzegorz Glinka followed these presentations. John Bonnen gave an overview on the work he is doing on Improved Fatigue Life Calculations Through Incorporation of Over- load Material Property Data Sets. Mike Messman and Art Page did not present their work on Fatigue Analysis of Multiple Recordings of Test Schedules because they were unable to attend the meeting. The summary of that work was postponed until the fall meeting of 1995. Tom Cordes reported that there had been no additional testing done to the log skidder bending history and that Chin- Chan Chu's concerns with the data from one of the strain gages had not yet been resolved. There was no Statistical Analysis Task Group efforts to report on outside of the test schedule work being done by Mike Messman and Art Page which will be addressed at the next meeting.

The Component Testing Division was chaired by Phil Dindinger. Tom Cordes described a new method of testing the SAE Notched Shaft that has been developed. The technique described loads the shaft with a three actuator system that better simulates actual rotating shaft loading by controlling the bending in two planes in addition to the torque. The test system requires remote parameter control /on-line transfer function compensation techniques to control the actuators from strain gages on the component and to sort out the cross talk between the actuators. He showed a video of the system in operation and indicated that fatigue life results and strain data taken on that system would be available to the committee at the next meeting. Phil Dindinger reported on the Effects of Surface Roughness Task Group Effort. Paul Swanson presented the results of his surface finish study of the samples that Phil had tested. There were obvious differences in the characterization of the finish that appear to be a function of hardness. The finish appeared to "tare" and "smear" more in the softer hardness materials. A comparison of the fatigue life data of the samples with the rougher surface finish relative to the baseline polished fatigue life data made it obvious that the polished sample endurance limit effect is either eliminated or reduced to a significantly lower strain level when the rougher surface finish is present. The data is available for surface finish notch factor study. Preliminary analysis of that data relative to the polished data indicates that the surface finish effect in the low cycle fatigue life regime can be consistently modeled by a stress concentration factor. Rolland Hartline reported on his analysis of the measured notch shaft strains distributed at the last meeting. Rolland's analysis indicated that the placing of strain gages in the notch requires that one pay close attention to detail. A little difference in the placement of the strain gage results in a big difference in the measured strain.

The Road Load Data and Simulation Group was chaired by Dan Morrow. Dan reported on the current activities on the Rainflow Format Standard and the status of the Time Histories Survey. Rick Mousseau and Steve Haeg addressed some multi-body dynamics issues. Some ideas on a vehicle for model development were discussed. The HMMWV quarter suspension and the M149A2 trailer were proposed as candidates for the effort. Dan Morrow, Ray Thompson and Charlie Sieck made presentations on their statistical analysis of the multi-pass road load data distributed at the last meeting.

The Surface Enhancement Division was chaired by Charles Barrett. Printed version of revised J-442 "Test Strip, Holder and Gage for Shot Peening" released by SAE. This is first revision of J-442 since 1979 (D. Francis). Comments from balloted J-827 and J- 1993 "High Carbon Cast Steel Shot and Grit" were reviewed by committee. All comments resolved except one by C. Carlin. Both specifications released by committee to next level of voting with negative comment attached (D. Hale). Comments from balloted J-445 "Recommended Procedure for Mechanical Testing for Durability of Metallic Shot and Grit" were reviewed. All comments resolved except one by C. Carlin. J-445 released by committee for next level of voting with negative comment attached (D. Hale). Progress reported by subcommittee on two handbooks: J-784 "X-Ray Diffraction" (A. Ahamad, P. Prevey, and C. Rudd), and J-792 "Blast Cleaning Manual" (E. Borsh & D. Lutsko) Proposed revision, draft #2, J-1830 "Ceramic Beads for Peening" was presented by G. Fernandez. Committee comments to be addressed in next draft due Sept. 1, 1995. Proposed new specifications for Yittria Zicronia presented by Jay Thomas, and Wrought Alloy Steel Grit by S. Kaufman were made to the division. Comments by committee to be addressed in revised drafts and be resubmitted by Sept. 1, 1995 for distribution before next meeting. Subcommittee meeting for J-443 "Procedure For Using Standard Test Strip" scheduled for May 16, 1995 in Ann Arbor, MI. Next Surface Enhancement Division Meeting is in Toronto on October 17-18, 1995.

Tour of Paccar Technical Center Test Facilities was coordinated by Gail Leese and Jim Scheltens. Both lab and laboratory test facilities were toured.
