To:  SAE FD&E members interested in Fatigue of Joints

As you have probably noticed, more and more tests are being done on welded joints.  The volume is such, that at Ford we have started a database for Fatigue of Connections.  (sort of an "FCON" rather than a "DEFCON" - {sorry its hard to resist a stretched pun} )

The volume is also large enough to have created a serious data conversion problem:

Lots of data, all in different formats.

Prognosis: Lots of time spent converting data formats

In order to prevent some of the difficulties in establishing an axial fatigue database, we have created some new standard file formats and are asking out test suppliers to submit data in this form.

  1. Spot Weld type of Overlap Shear Fatigue

     http://fde.uwaterloo.ca/Fde/saeStdSpotWeld.html

  3. Adhesive Overlap Shear Fatigue

     http://fde.uwaterloo.ca/Fde/saeStdBonded.html

  2. Fusion Weld Overlap Shear Fatigue

     http://fde.uwaterloo.ca/Fde/saeStdFusionWeld.html

This last file contains text about how the files are organized      in general.

Other variants come to mind, but at the moment these probably cover the majority of joint tests.

At the Fall 2006 F.D.& E. meeting I will present these file format proposals, but in order to create more discussion and input I would appreciate your taking a preview of the material and perhaps offer some comment, pro or con, on the subject at the meeting.

Cheers,

Al Conle

ps.: Our tensile test database, using standard files, is coming along      nicely here at Ford.  How's yours?   :)
